Side Effects

Anabolic steroids have a purpose in medicine. They are used to help people infected with HIV to gain weight, and for men who cannot produce enough testosterone. Other uses of anabolic steroids are illegal, and can have drastic, undesired side effects.[6]

People who take steroids take them because they want to get bigger and stronger. Even though they do get bigger and stronger, there are other negative side effects. Some of these side effects prove to be hazardous to the user, and even sometimes to people around the user. Steroids can affect and break-down many parts of the body. In males a decrease in sperm count, impotence, shrinkage of the testicles, and also growth in the breasts can occur. In females deeper voices, balding, facial hair, and a hormonal imbalance can occur. In both males and females, steroids can cause acne, injuries to tendons and muscles, damage to the liver, and an increase in cholesterol. Anabolic steroids can cause a stunting in growth for teenagers who are not fully done growing.[7] When used in cycles, steroids disrupt the natural balance of the physical body and mental system. When the mental system is affected like this, it has almost a bipolar-like effect. At some points the person is high, and the next the person is low. This unstable mind can lead to erratic behavior, sometimes called “roid rage”. Roid rage can be harmful to the user and others, physically and mentally.[8] The scariest effect of steroid use is that anabolic steroids can be extremely addictive.

This is not a full list of steroid side-effects, just the most common. These pictures show more details.
