Efforts to Stop Steroid Use

In the early 1930’s the first anabolic steroid was created from experimenting with bird testosterone. In 1938 the first efforts were made to stop the use of steroids when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared it illegal for the use and sale of adulterated substances. [9] The use of anabolic steroids began to rise, and in the 1970’s the problem was first addressed in sports. The Olympic Council with other professional organizations wanted to stop the use of anabolic steroids and be able to test for athletes who used them. In 1990 the FDA passed Anabolic Steroid Control Act, which banned 27 anabolic steroids. In 2004, Congress added 36 more anabolic steroids to the list.[10] The United States took action to stop the use of anabolic steroids, but there is still a problem today.

Stopping the use of steroids is a tough problem to stop because of the wide variety steroids and a wide variety of ways to pass a test. A test for anabolic steroids tests the hormone levels in a person’s body. Too much of one type of hormone means a person is using steroids. But the users can take drugs that counter the elevated hormone levels, so it looks as though there is no imbalance.[11] The drugs used to counteract the steroids, the more drugs are made illegal. There are many ways to pass a drug test, but it looks like the methods are working. Numbers have show recently that teenagers have reduced their anabolic steroid use by 50%.
